Power outages, potholes, and pigs in the road! That’s the reality of Nicaragua today. If you subscribe to any of the marketing publications pumping Nicaragua as the best real estate investment destination in Central America, there is some truth to their statements. However, the real truth is that Nicaragua is steadily attracting people looking for a better quality of life and more adventure. Imagine waking up in San Juan del Sur and going surfing, then fishing for dorado, then hiking a volcano, and then having dinner with friends in Granada, the oldest Spanish colonial city in the Americas, just over an hour away. That’s what we did last Saturday.

Peeking in to San Juan del Sur

Marsella Beach

Nicaragua’s natural beauty and outdoor activities are good enough reasons to fall in love with this country, but when you spend time with the people is when you really get sucked in. San Juan del Sur has its own unique International flare. Our neighbors are from Germany, Denmark, Australia, Austria, Belgium, North America, Italy, Spain, Holland, South Africa, France, Ireland, England, and of course Nicaragua.

If you are ready to brush up on those Boy Scout or Girl Scout skills and have mandatory candle light dinners, we invite you to visit us in Nicaragua before she is discovered by the masses and changed forever. I traded 20+ hours per week on a southern California freeway for power outages, potholes, and pigs and chickens in the road…and I am a much happier person. I am confident many more will do the same, maybe even you!

The History of San Juan del Sur

The History of San Juan del Sur

Written by Ana Maria Ch. De Holmann and edited by Sarah LaBarre

In October of 2002, the Port of San Juan del Sur commemorated its 150th anniversary of obtaining city status. As part of this celebration, it was officially recognized as "Nicaragua’s Tourist Port." San Juan’s historical significance is clearly rooted in its prime geographical location on Nicaragua's southern Pacific Coast, which has made it a hub for trade, communication, and tourism for centuries.

San Juan del Sur has undergone numerous name changes over the years. In the second half of the 16th century, it was called "The Port of San Juan del Sur in the Southern Sea." Archival records show at least three different names used in the 19th century, including "Port of Independence," "San Juan of the Concordance," and "Pineda City." None of these names stuck, however, and although locals most often use the short form "San Juan," in certain contexts it remains preferable to use the full name to distinguish the city from San Juan del Norte on the Atlantic Coast. Water’s Edge International Realty to Sponsor International Coastal Cleanup in Nicaragua

Water’s Edge International Realty to Sponsor International Coastal Cleanup in Nicaragua

Matthew Holgerson

The International Coastal Cleanup was established in 1986 and continues to expand internationally each year. Originally, the event focused on removing trash and other debris from the bodies of water in Texas, USA, but over the past 20 years has grown to include some 92 countries. This is Nicaragua’s first time to participate in the one-day event.

The beaches of San Juan del Sur bay, Marsella, Maderas, and Majagual will be cleaned of trash and other debris by over 100 local youth volunteers, and with the support of San Juan del Sur mayor Eduardo Holmann. Water’s Edge International Realty is one of the many local sponsors providing logistical support in conjunction with larger organizations such as Coca-Cola, Philip Morris and the EPA. The international event is scheduled for September 16th, but in Nicaragua is scheduled for September 9th so as not to coincide with Nicaragua's Independence Day on September 15th.

Insuring your property in Nicaragua

Insuring your property in Nicaragua

Been curious about how to Insure your property in Nicaragua? There are many similarities between home owner’s Insurance policies in North America and Nicaragua. There are also differences, for example: flooding in Nicaragua is covered exactly opposite as it would be in a homeowner policy in the States. In Nicaragua, water damage to a house is only covered if it comes in contact with the ground before it enters the structure, so leaks from the roof or water damage from a broken pipe in the ceiling are excluded under Nicaraguan policies.

In an effort to provide you the most accurate home owner’s Insurance information, we have partnered with CSISA, a bilingual, independent Insurance brokerage firm based in Managua. For more information, contact Mike Newton at CSISA with your questions by clicking here.
